VISIT OF FR. JEFFREY S. BURWELL, SJ, PROVINCIAL OF CANADA

From April 17 to 23, we had the joy of welcoming Fr. Jeffrey S. Burwell, SJ, Provincial of Canada and also Superior of Haiti, as the Haitian territory belongs to the Province of Canada. He first traveled to Santo Domingo, and from there by land to the border town of Dajabón, where he crossed into Wanament to meet with the Jesuits, collaborators, and friends of the mission.

The visit took place exclusively in Wanament, due to the impossibility of traveling to Port-au-Prince and the southern region of the country because of ongoing insecurity and the lack of safe transportation to those areas.

During his stay, Fr. Jeffrey took part in the Triduum celebrated at the Parish of d’Osmond, sharing moments of prayer and fraternity. He also visited some of the most significant works in the area, such as San Ignacio School, which serves nearly 1,000 students under the leadership of the Sisters of the Compagnie de Marie Notre Dame. He also visited Espesil, a center for adult education, the Jesuit Service for Migrants (SJM), and the Jesuit Novitiate, where he spent time with the young men in formation.

The Wanament community received this visit with great joy, and it left a deep sense of hope for the future.

Before returning, in Santo Domingo, Fr. Jeffrey S. Burwell, SJ, also met with the Haitian Jesuit students currently pursuing their studies there.
